You won’t pay for Twitter — but what about apps?

It was news that wasn’t really “news”: a survey showing that zero percent of people (that’s right: ZERO percent) wouldn’t pay for Twitter.

I’m not sure I buy that. For years, “people” said “other people” would never pay for TV, either.

(Have you seen your cable or satellite bill lately — or like me, are you too afraid to open it…?)

Anyway: Darren Rowse of ProBlogger took up the subject of “free” today and talked about “5 Tools I Am Willing to Pay for [And Recommend] to Improve My Blogs.”

I’ll be checking them out shortly. His ideas tend to be really good.

I switched from some free Twitter apps to paid ones because for me, they are a business expense.

When (free) TweetDeck was crashing every five minutes during the World Cup, I was happily (and smugly) responding using MarketMeTweet that I wasn’t noticing any down time.

Why I switched from TweetDeck to MarketMeTweet

I was a big fan of TweetDeck but after using MarketMeTweet for one week straight, I don’t miss TweetDeck one bit.

It’s not just that TweetDeck’s been experiencing lots of “issues” lately, either.

The MarketMeTweet interface is VERY similar to that of TweetDeck, so I picked it up right away.

BUT the big selling point for me is this –

MarketMeTweet has a bunch of special features that TweetDeck just doesn’t have:

SponsoredTweets: how to make money with Twitter

Lately, I’ve noticed a BIG up tick in the amount I’m making from Sponsored Tweets referrals.

With SponsoredTweets, you make money when advertisers run promotions on your Twitter feed — but you also earn a percentage of money earned by people you’ve signed up for SponsoredTweets.

I’ve been getting lots of emails lately from SponsoredTweets, telling me I’ve made money from people I’ve referred. This increase has happened suddenly but has remained steady. I figure this means SponsoredTweets is growing and thriving.

I prefer SponsoredTweets to other Twitter revenue channels like RevTwit, because the ads you can choose to run through SponsoredTweets are higher quality and far less “spammy” and tacky. They are far less likely to annoy your Twitter followers, too.

Anyway, I sense that all this activity (along with RevTwt’s much-needed website makeover) means Twitter network advertising is hanging on in this economy. Imagine how it might take off in boom times.
